As soon as I saw this writing desk in the OP Shop / Thrift Store I knew it was coming home with me. Forget an already cramped car full of other furniture finds, this was gorgeous. Well, it could be...
I don't usually criticise the colour choices of others, but I have absolutely no idea why you would paint an antique writing desk in this green. Don't get me wrong, green can be beautiful, but this... isn't. For some reason it reminds me of my primary school uniform, and not in a good way!
I knew I wanted to take advantage of the closed interior to use a soft colour, so I found this gorgeous blue grey for the inside...
...and for a lotus flower on the front.
I don't know about anyone else, but I find getting the perfect knobs a little difficult. The stores near where I live have very basic (and a little ugly) ones, which were definitely not right for the piece. Lucky for me my sister pointed me in the direction of Ezibuy (who knew??) where I found the glass ones for this piece. I would love to hear where you source your drawer knobs - is it luck or do you have a tried and true source?
While I love this desk, it's another item I'm hoping to sell. Lucky me sold the entertainment unit I blogged about here, so I'm feeling good!

fold-out writing desks are awesome i've had one since childhood. i love the new colors and the lotus on the front is a nice touch!
ReplyDeleteOh this looks so classy and beautiful Catherine!! LOVE the lotus flower, so cute!!
ReplyDeleteEzibuy?! I definitely didn't know that! I've stocked up on some at provincial living (the closest one to me is over an hour away), its the only place I've found any nice ones. Not sure if they're up your way? the only options here are hardware stores and needless to say - they don't have nice ones! I've looked on ebay before, but then I wanted them straight away and like to see and touch that sort of thing before I commit.
Wow it looks a million dollars now, I so love the white!! What a good job its turned out great, I can see people racing to buy that Catherine :)
ReplyDeleteThis is now a real charmer.
ReplyDeleteYour transformation is really wonderful and classic! I found you on Primitive & Proper and I'm now following you. Have a great week!

ReplyDeleteReally beautiful desk! You did a great job giving it a new life!
ReplyDeleteLove the desk and yes, white is better than that green. Beautiful job! Thank you for sharing. Visiting from Primp. Would love it if you would share this at my Make it Pretty Monday party at The Dedicated House. http://thededicatedhouse.blogspot.com/2012/08/make-it-pretty-monday-week-9.html Hope to see you at the bash! ReplyDeleteI love the new look, clean, crisp and beautiful. I love that piece because it has such a great function and works anywhere in a home. I am currently looking for something like that.
ReplyDeleteI also want to thank you for stopping by InspirationsbyD.blogspot.com I enjoyed having you over & hope to see you again. Have a fabulous & blessed weekend.
The desk came up beautifully. I am soon to paint my grandfather's drop front dest to go into my eldest kiddos room.
ReplyDeleteWe are definitely limited here for knob/handle choices compared to the USA. I have bought ceramic 'melon' knobs from Everyday Living in the past but I don't think they carry them anymore. Recollections at Early Settler have a good range - another favourite source is salvage yards - you sometimes have to do a bit of sorting to find matching sets but definitely worth it. Ebay is a good source too, but time consuming scrolling through the ads. I will have a look at Ezi-buy as I had no idea they sold hardware.
What a beautiful piece! It really shines. Megan
ReplyDeleteFabulous find! I wish we had the space for me to transform more furniture finds! Thanks for the heads up on the knobs...no hobby lobby up here. We've had good luck with Lee Valley for pulls and unique handles.
